Audio Overview Intermediate
One of NotebookLM's most distinctive features is Audio Overview - the ability to generate a podcast-style audio discussion between two AI hosts who conversationally explain and discuss your source material. It is like having a custom podcast created from your documents.
What is Audio Overview?
Audio Overview generates a natural-sounding conversation between two AI hosts who discuss the content of your uploaded sources. The hosts explain concepts, ask each other questions, share insights, and make the material accessible in an engaging audio format.
Generating an Audio Overview

Prepare your sources
Make sure you have at least one source uploaded to your notebook. Select the sources you want included in the audio discussion.

Click "Generate" in the Audio Overview section
In the notebook, find the Audio Overview panel (usually in the top section or Studio panel). Click the "Generate" button.

Optionally add custom instructions
Before generating, you can provide instructions to customize the audio. For example, "Focus on chapter 3" or "Explain concepts as if speaking to a beginner."

Wait for generation
Audio Overview generation takes a few minutes. The length depends on the amount of source material, typically producing 5-15 minutes of audio.

Listen and download
Play the audio directly in NotebookLM or download it as an audio file to listen offline.

You can guide the Audio Overview generation with custom instructions:

Limitations
- Audio Overview is generated by AI and may occasionally simplify or miss nuances in your source material

- The audio is in English only (as of the current version)
- You cannot edit the generated audio - if you want changes, regenerate with different instructions
- Very short sources may produce less engaging audio discussions
