What is TextFX?

TextFX is a suite of AI-powered creative writing tools developed by Google in collaboration with Grammy-winning rapper and lyricist Lupe Fiasco. The tools are designed to help writers, poets, lyricists, and anyone interested in creative language explore new ways of thinking about words and ideas.

Unlike general-purpose AI writing assistants, TextFX provides specialized tools that each focus on a specific creative writing technique. There are ten distinct tools, each named for the linguistic concept it explores.

The TextFX Tools

Each TextFX tool takes a word, phrase, or concept as input and applies a specific creative transformation:

1. Simile

Generates creative similes for a given concept. Enter a word or idea, and TextFX produces unexpected comparisons using "like" or "as."

Input: Loneliness

2. Explode

Breaks a word into its component sounds, meanings, or associations, revealing hidden connections and creative possibilities within everyday language.

3. Unexpect

Takes a cliche or common phrase and transforms it into something unexpected. This tool helps writers avoid predictable language by generating fresh alternatives to overused expressions.

Input: Time flies

Output:
Time stumbles through molasses
Time sprints on broken shoelaces
Time tiptoes past when you are not looking

4. Chain

Creates a chain of associations from one word to another, building a bridge of connected ideas. This is useful for finding unexpected thematic connections in writing.

5. POV (Point of View)

Describes a concept from an unusual or unexpected perspective. Enter a topic, and the tool reimagines it from a surprising point of view.

6. Alliteration

Generates phrases and sentences where multiple words begin with the same sound. Perfect for creating catchy headlines, song lyrics, or poetic lines.

7. Acronym

Creates meaningful acronyms from a given word. Each letter of the input becomes the starting letter of a word in a phrase, creating a backronym that relates to the original concept.

8. Fuse

Combines two seemingly unrelated concepts into a new hybrid idea. This tool is excellent for brainstorming product names, creative concepts, or metaphors.

9. Scene

Creates a vivid sensory scene around a given word or concept. The tool generates rich, descriptive passages that engage all five senses.

Using TextFX Effectively

Here are strategies for getting the most out of TextFX:

• Combine tools: Use the output from one tool as input for another. For example, take a Simile result and run it through Unexpect.
• Start abstract: Abstract concepts often produce more creative results than concrete nouns.
• Iterate: Run the same input multiple times - each generation produces different results.
• Mix with your own writing: Use TextFX output as seeds for your own creative expansion.
• Songwriting workflow: Use Chain to find thematic connections, Simile for imagery, and Alliteration for hooks.

VideoFX: AI Video Generation

VideoFX is Google's AI video generation experiment, powered by the Veo model from Google DeepMind. It generates short video clips from text descriptions, bringing static ideas to life with motion, camera movement, and temporal coherence.

Prompt Techniques for Video

Video prompts require thinking about time, motion, and camera work in addition to the visual elements used in image prompts:

VideoFX provides several controls to customize your generated videos:

• Duration: Videos are typically generated in short clips (a few seconds). Longer durations may be available as the technology evolves.
• Aspect ratio: Choose between landscape (16:9), portrait (9:16), and square (1:1) formats.
• Style presets: Some style options may be available to guide the visual aesthetic.
• Resolution: Generated videos aim for high-quality output suitable for sharing and basic production use.
