PMax Fundamentals Beginner

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's AI-powered campaign type that serves ads across all Google channels from a single campaign: Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, and Maps. Instead of managing separate campaigns for each channel, you provide assets and goals, and Google's AI handles the rest.

How Performance Max Works

PMax uses Google's machine learning to optimize three key dimensions simultaneously:

DimensionWhat AI DecidesYour Input
CreativeWhich combination of assets to showHeadlines, descriptions, images, videos
TargetingWhich audiences to reach and whenAudience signals to guide initial targeting
BiddingHow much to bid for each impressionConversion goals and target CPA or ROAS

Google Channels in PMax

A single PMax campaign can serve ads across all Google-owned properties:

  • Google Search: Text ads appear alongside organic search results for relevant queries
  • Google Display Network: Image and responsive ads across millions of websites and apps
  • YouTube: Video ads including in-stream, in-feed, and Shorts placements
  • Gmail: Promotional ads in Gmail's Promotions tab
  • Google Discover: Native-format ads in the Discover feed on mobile
  • Google Maps: Local ads for businesses with physical locations
  • Google Shopping: Product listing ads for e-commerce (requires Merchant Center feed)
💡
Key difference: Unlike traditional campaigns where you choose channels and targeting, PMax is goal-based. You tell Google what conversions you want and how much you are willing to pay. The AI determines the best channel, audience, and creative combination to achieve that goal.

When to Use Performance Max

  • Best for: Advertisers with clear conversion goals, sufficient conversion data (at least 30 conversions per month), and diverse creative assets
  • Good for: E-commerce businesses (with Shopping feed), lead generation, local businesses, and app promotion
  • Consider alternatives when: You need granular channel control, have very limited budget, or need to target specific placements or keywords exclusively
