Bidding & Budget Strategy Intermediate

Bidding and budget decisions are critical for PMax performance. Google's AI determines how to spend your budget across channels and auctions, but the bidding strategy and budget level you set determine the constraints within which the AI operates.

PMax Bidding Strategies

Budget Guidelines

  • Minimum daily budget: Set at least 3-5x your target CPA as the daily budget. This gives the AI enough room to learn and optimize
  • Learning period: Allow 2-4 weeks for the AI to learn before making significant changes. PMax needs approximately 50 conversions to complete its learning phase
  • Avoid frequent changes: Changing budgets or targets more than once per week resets the learning process. Make changes in increments of 10-20%
  • Scale gradually: When increasing budget, do so in 20-30% increments every 1-2 weeks to maintain efficiency
💡
Start broad, then tighten: Begin with Maximize Conversions (no target CPA) to let the AI learn your conversion patterns. Once you have 50+ conversions, switch to Target CPA with a target based on your observed cost per conversion.

How PMax Allocates Budget

PMax dynamically allocates budget across channels based on where it predicts the best conversion opportunities. You cannot manually control channel allocation, but you can influence it through your conversion goals, asset types, and audience signals.

Budget Optimization Tips

  1. Monitor Channel Distribution

Use the Insights report to see how budget is distributed across channels. If a channel dominates without delivering conversions, review your asset quality for that channel.

  2. Adjust Conversion Values

If PMax is spending too much on low-value conversions, adjust your conversion value settings to prioritize higher-value actions.

  3. Use Seasonality Adjustments

Apply seasonality bid adjustments during known peak periods (sales events, holidays) to help the AI respond to temporary changes in conversion rates.

Budget test: If you are unsure about optimal budget, start with a conservative amount and track your CPA for two weeks. If CPA is below target, increase budget by 20%. Repeat until CPA approaches your target to find the optimal spending level.
