Understanding Story Structure
Every Storyship story is built from these core building blocks:
- Scenes: Individual pages or moments in your story. Each scene contains text, media, and optionally choices for the reader.
- Choices: Decision points where the reader selects what happens next. Each choice leads to a different scene.
- Branches: Paths through the story created by different choice sequences. A story can have many branches.
- Variables: Data you track throughout the story (scores, inventory items, character traits) that can affect what scenes are shown.
- Endings: Terminal scenes where a branch of the story concludes. Stories can have multiple endings.
Scene 1: "The Mysterious Letter" You find a letter on your desk... Choice A: Open it immediately → Scene 2A Choice B: Examine the envelope first → Scene 2B Scene 2A: "Inside the Letter" The letter reveals a secret map... Choice A: Follow the map → Scene 3A Choice B: Show it to a friend → Scene 3B Scene 2B: "The Envelope's Secret" You notice a hidden watermark... Choice A: Research the watermark → Scene 3C Choice B: Open the letter now → Scene 2A
Your First Story
Let's create a simple interactive story to learn the basics:
-
Create a New Story
From your dashboard, click "New Story." Choose "Start from scratch" or select a template. Give your story a title.
-
Write the Opening Scene
Write or use AI to generate the first scene. This sets the stage and introduces the reader to the story world.
-
Add Your First Choice
At the end of the opening scene, add a choice point with two or three options for the reader.
-
Create Branch Scenes
Write a follow-up scene for each choice. Each path should feel meaningfully different.
-
Preview and Test
Use the preview mode to play through your story as a reader. Test each branch to make sure the flow makes sense.
Using the AI Assistant
Storyship's AI assistant can help at every stage of story creation:
- "Generate a scene": Describe what happens and AI writes the full scene text
- "Suggest choices": AI proposes meaningful decision points based on the current scene
- "Expand this": Give AI a brief outline and it writes a detailed version
- "Write dialogue": AI creates character conversations based on the situation
- "Create a character": Describe a character type and AI generates a detailed profile
Templates
Storyship provides templates for common story types:
- Mystery: Investigation-based story with clues, suspects, and a resolution
- Adventure: Exploration story with locations, items, and challenges
- Training scenario: Workplace situation with correct and incorrect responses
- Educational quiz: Knowledge-testing story with scoring and feedback
