Spaces Intermediate

Spaces (formerly Collections) let you organize your Perplexity research into topic-specific areas with custom AI instructions, uploaded knowledge files, and team collaboration - like creating a specialized research assistant for each project.

What are Spaces?

A Space is a dedicated research area where you can:

  • Set custom AI instructions that apply to all searches within the Space
  • Upload knowledge files (PDFs, docs) that the AI references when answering
  • Keep all related search threads organized in one place
  • Collaborate with team members on shared research
  • Choose a specific AI model for the Space
Think of Spaces as: Customized research assistants. You might have one Space for "Machine Learning Research" with academic instructions, another for "Product Competitive Analysis" with business-focused prompts, and a third for "Travel Planning" with personal preferences.

Creating a Space

  1. Navigate to Spaces

Click "Spaces" in the left sidebar of Perplexity.

  2. Click "Create Space"

Give your Space a name and optional description.

  3. Set custom instructions

Write instructions that tell the AI how to behave within this Space. For example: "Always cite academic papers. Focus on peer-reviewed sources. Present findings in a structured format with methodology notes."

  4. Upload knowledge files (optional)

Upload PDFs, documents, or other files that the AI should reference when answering questions in this Space.

  5. Choose an AI model (optional)

Select which AI model to use for searches in this Space.

Custom Instructions

Custom instructions shape how the AI responds within a Space. Here are effective instruction examples:

Academic Research Space
You are a research assistant specializing in neuroscience.
- Prioritize peer-reviewed papers and academic sources
- Include publication dates and journal names in citations
- Note sample sizes and methodology when relevant
- Flag any contradictory findings between studies
- Use formal academic language
Product Analysis Space
You are a product analyst for a SaaS startup.
- Focus on competitor features, pricing, and market positioning
- Include data from G2, Capterra, and industry reports
- Present comparisons in table format when possible

- Be concise and action-oriented

Knowledge Files

Upload files to give your Space persistent context that the AI can reference:

Use Case What to Upload Result
Course study Textbook chapters, lecture notes, syllabus AI answers questions using your course materials
Legal research Contracts, regulations, case law PDFs AI references specific legal documents in answers
Company research Annual reports, product specs, internal docs AI provides answers grounded in company data
Book analysis Book PDFs, articles about the book AI discusses themes, quotes, and analysis

Collaborating in Spaces

Spaces can be shared with others for team research:

  • Invite members: Add team members by email or Perplexity username
  • Shared threads: All members can see and contribute to search threads
  • Shared knowledge: Uploaded files are accessible to all Space members
  • Shared instructions: Custom AI instructions apply to everyone in the Space
Pro Required: Spaces are a Pro feature. Free users can view shared Spaces but cannot create their own or upload knowledge files.

Try It Yourself

Create a Space for a topic you are actively researching. Set custom instructions that match your needs, upload any relevant documents, and run a few searches within the Space to see how the custom context improves the results.
