Your First Conversation

Here is a simple example to get you started:

Example Conversation
You:
I'm learning to use ChatGPT. Can you explain what you
can help me with in 3 bullet points?

ChatGPT:
1. Answer questions and explain concepts - I can
break down complex topics in simple terms, from
   science to history to programming.

2. Help you write and create - I can draft emails,
essays, code, stories, and more. Just tell me the
   format and tone you need.

3. Analyze and process information - Upload documents,
images, or data and I'll summarize, extract insights,
or help you make sense of it.

Understanding the Interface

The ChatGPT interface has several key areas:

Element Description
Sidebar Shows your conversation history, organized by date. You can rename, pin, archive, or delete conversations.
Model Selector Dropdown at the top to choose between available models (GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, o1, etc.).
Chat Input Text box at the bottom where you type your messages. Supports markdown formatting.
Attachment Button Paperclip icon to upload files, images, or documents for analysis.
Voice Button Microphone icon to start a voice conversation with ChatGPT.
Settings Access custom instructions, data controls, connected apps, and subscription management.

Voice, Vision, and File Uploads

Voice Mode

ChatGPT supports Advanced Voice Mode, allowing you to have natural spoken conversations. The AI can listen, understand, and respond with a human-like voice. Voice mode is available on mobile and desktop and supports multiple languages.

Tip: Voice mode is great for brainstorming, practicing language learning, or when your hands are busy. You can interrupt ChatGPT mid-sentence and it will adjust its response.

Vision (Image Input)

ChatGPT can analyze images you upload or take with your camera. Use cases include:

  • Reading text from photos and screenshots
  • Identifying objects, landmarks, or plants
  • Interpreting charts, graphs, and diagrams
  • Debugging code from screenshots
  • Describing images for accessibility

File Uploads

Upload documents for ChatGPT to read and analyze:

  • PDFs - Research papers, contracts, manuals
  • Spreadsheets - CSV and Excel files for data analysis
  • Code files - Source code for review and debugging
  • Images - Photos, screenshots, diagrams
  • Text files - Plain text, markdown, JSON, XML

Canvas Feature

Canvas is a collaborative editing interface within ChatGPT. Instead of generating content only in the chat thread, Canvas opens a side panel where you and ChatGPT can co-edit text or code together.

💡
When to use Canvas: Canvas is ideal for writing long-form content (articles, reports, emails) or working on code files. You can highlight specific sections and ask ChatGPT to edit just that part, suggest improvements, adjust reading level, or add comments.

Memory Feature

ChatGPT can remember information across conversations. When Memory is enabled, ChatGPT learns your preferences, context, and details over time so it can give more personalized responses.

Examples of what Memory can store:

  • Your name, role, and job title
  • Programming languages you prefer
  • Writing style preferences (formal, casual, technical)
  • Projects you are working on
  • Formatting preferences (bullet points, tables, code blocks)
Privacy note: You can view, edit, and delete individual memories at any time from Settings > Personalization > Memory. You can also turn off Memory entirely if you prefer.
