Introduction to AI Bias & Fairness
AI systems can perpetuate and amplify societal biases, leading to unfair outcomes for already marginalized groups. Understanding and addressing bias is both an ethical imperative and a practical necessity.
What is AI Bias?
AI bias refers to systematic errors in AI systems that produce unfair outcomes, such as privileging one group over another. Bias can enter at any stage of the machine learning pipeline: data collection, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and deployment.
Why Fairness Matters

Protected Attributes

Fairness Metrics
Mathematical definitions of fairness including demographic parity, equalized odds, and disparate impact. No single metric captures all aspects of fairness.
Fairness-Accuracy Tradeoff
Enforcing strict fairness constraints may reduce overall accuracy. Understanding this tradeoff is essential for making informed decisions.
Intersectionality
Bias often compounds across multiple attributes. A model fair for women and fair for minorities may still be unfair for women of color.
