How scoring works: Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 - 1.015 x (words / sentences) - 84.6 x (syllables / words). Higher is easier: 90+ reads like a comic book, 60-70 is plain English, below 30 is academic prose. The Flesch-Kincaid grade converts the same signals into a US school grade level. Syllables are estimated with a vowel-group heuristic (counting vowel clusters, discounting silent final e), which lands within a few percent on typical English text. Passive voice is flagged with a "was / were / been / being + past participle" pattern, so it can miss some forms and occasionally flag adjectives. Everything runs locally in your browser.
