Your disclosure statements
When is disclosure required vs just good practice?
- Often required: academic submissions (most journals and universities now mandate AI-use statements), political ads in several jurisdictions, some marketplaces and app stores for AI-generated media, and anywhere your contract or client requires it. The EU AI Act also requires that people be told when they are interacting with a chatbot and that certain AI-generated media be labeled.
- Good practice: blogs, marketing copy, product images, and code. Audiences increasingly expect honesty about AI involvement, and a short disclosure builds more trust than being discovered later.
- Rule of thumb: disclose when a reasonable reader, buyer, or reviewer would feel misled if they later learned AI produced the work. Rules vary by jurisdiction and platform and change quickly, so check the requirements that apply to you.
