Assignment feedback drafts

Teachers spend more time writing feedback than reading work. An agent can draft against the rubric, but the grade is a professional judgement with consequences for a student's record, and it stays with the teacher.

The job on one screen

Runs whenAn assignment is submitted and the rubric exists.
ReadsThe submission, the rubric, the assignment brief, and exemplar answers.
DecidesWhich rubric criteria are evidenced, and what specific feedback would help.
ProducesDraft feedback per criterion with quotes from the work.
Stops whenDraft produced. The teacher edits and grades.
Tools it needsSubmission store, rubric, exemplar library.
Autonomy to start atApprove. It does the work and stops before the irreversible step.

Optional: load a real model

The checks the draft has to pass

The model writes, then code checks. A draft that fails any check never reaches the send step, and the failure is shown rather than silently patched.

CheckWhat it protects against
No grade or scoreA drafted grade anchors the teacher and, if it leaks, becomes a decision the student can challenge.
No comparison to peersComparative feedback is demotivating and, in many institutions, against policy.
Contains a concrete next stepFeedback without an action is a verdict, and students cannot act on a verdict.
Under 90 wordsLong feedback is read as criticism regardless of content, and the specific advice gets lost.

Where this one goes wrong

Grading by implication

Excellent work with minor issues is a grade. Keep evaluative language out and stay descriptive.

Generic feedback

Feedback that would fit any essay teaches nothing. Require a quote from the actual work in every criterion.

Detecting AI use

Do not let this agent judge whether work was AI-written. Those detectors are unreliable and the accusation is serious.

How you would know it is working

MeasureWhy that one
Teacher edit rateHow much they change before sending.
Time per assignmentThe saving, and it is substantial.
Student action on feedbackThe outcome that matters and almost nobody measures.

Earning more rope

AssistDraft feedback for the teacher to rewrite.
ApproveDraft with rubric criteria evidenced, teacher edits and grades. Right level.
AutoNever grade automatically. Assessment decisions carry academic and legal weight.
Feedback and grading are different acts. One can be drafted at volume, the other is a professional judgement that a person has to be able to defend.
